Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry article accepted

A manuscript by Raquel Bernardino and colleagues, entitled:"Estrogenic regulation of bicarbonate transporters from SLC4 family in rat Sertoli cells", was accepted for publication in Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. This article evaluates the effect of E2 on the expression and function of the most relevant SLC4 bicarbonate transporters in rat sertoli cells, providing new insights on infertility cases associated with sex steroid hormone deregulation.

Luís Rato - Doctoral Degree

Luís Rato has been awarded a PhD degree in Biomedicine after defending his thesis entitled "High energy diets and Diabetes Mellitus: a Threat for Male Fertility", in a public presentation that took place at UBI. The jury composed by Professors José Martinez de Oliveira, António Rocha, Mariana Monteiro, Rita Ferreira and Pedro F. Oliveira awarded him a classification of 19 values (out of 20). Congratulations!!

Pedro F. Oliveira was appointed as reviewer for Le Studium Research Fellowships

Pedro F. Oliveira was recently invited to serve as evaluator for the Le Studium Research Fellowships of the Loire Valley Institute for Advanced Studies, which is a consortium of research institutions and universities of "région Centre" of France supporting some areas of basic scientific research.

Current Drug Targets article accepted!

An article entitled “CFTR regulation of Aquaporin-mediated water transport: a target in male fertility” by Alves et al. has been accepted for publication in Current Drug Targets. This article presents an up-to-date review and discussion on the role of CFTR on the aquaporin-mediated water transport mechanisms in the male reproductive tract and its involvement on the male reproductive potential.

The article entitled “Aquaporin-9 is expressed in rat Sertoli cells and interacts with the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator” by Jesus et al. has been selected as featured article for the current issue of IUBMB Life. This article presents a first report describing the presence of AQP9, and its interaction with CFTR, in rat Sertoli cells.

An article entitled “Aquaporin-9 is expressed in rat Sertoli cells and interacts with the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator” by Jesus et al. has been accepted for publication in IUBMB Life. This article presents a first report describing the presence of AQP9, and its interaction with CFTR, in rat Sertoli cells, providing evidence that CFTR is involved in water homeostasis of the seminiferous tubular secretion.

An article entitled “Sperm glucose transport and metabolism in diabetic individuals” has been accepted for publication in Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology. This article presents an overview on the implications of Diabetes Mellitus in sperm glucose transport and metabolism. The understanding of the functioning and regulation of these processes is essential to identify the mechanisms associated with Diabetes-related male infertility.

An article entitled “Physiology of Na+/H+ Exchangers in the Male Reproductive Tract: Relevance for Male Fertility” has been accepted for publication in Biology of Reproduction. This article addresses the physiological roles of SLC9 family members in the male reproductive tract, as well as the molecular basis of H+ transport and its involvement in male reproductive potential.

An article entitled “Aquaporin-4 as a molecular partner of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator in rat Sertoli cells” has been accepted for publication in BBRC. This article addresses the molecular interaction established between AQP-4 and CFTR in Sertoli cells.

An article entitled “Effect of pre-diabetes on membrane bicarbonate transporters in testis and epididymis ” has been accepted for publication in Journal of Membrane Biology. This article addresses the effect of the pre-diabetic state on the expression of specific HCO3--dependent membrane ion transporters, particularly those of the SLC4 family, in testicular and epididymal tissues.

A review article entitled “Molecular basis of bicarbonate membrane transport in the male reproductive tract” has been accepted for publication in Current Medicinal Chemistry. This article addresses the relevance of the major families of HCO3- membrane transporters, discussing the molecular basis of bicarbonate transport in the male reproductive tract and their role in male-associated infertility.

A review article entitled “Hormonal control of Sertoli cell metabolism regulates spermatogenesis” has been accepted for publication in Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences. This article addresses the relevance of hormonal regulation of Sertoli cells for the normal occurrence of spermatogenesis.
