Engleman was a dentist as well as a contract killer. While contact killers can differ slightly from serial killers, Engleman still meets the criteria of a serial killer. The difference is that he was motivated by money instead of a thrill. He lacked empathy and did not have remorse for killing. His first kill occurred with his ex-wife. She remarried and they killed her new spouse in order to split his life insurance. Engleman was born in 1927 on February 6. He died in March of 1999. He operated in Saint Louis and Illinois, using a rifle, sledgehammer, and some explosives in his kills. He was apprehended shortly after his birthday in 1980. He had multiple people he was close to help him scheme his kills. The number of his victims is unknown. We know he killed at least five people.
Engleman had a good upbringing. Not much sticks out in his early life. He was just an average child. Sometimes serial killers have a chemical imbalance in their brain where they lack empathy. If I was to guess, that was most likely the case with Engleman.
In 1958, Engleman killed James Stanley Bullock. He shot him near the STL Art Museum. This was the murder he planned with his wife. His next murder was in 1963, where he killed Eric Frey by bludgeoning his to death. He used explosives to blow the body up afterward. Once again, he split the life insurance with the widow. In 1976, Peter Halm was killed, and the hit was ordered by Halm's wife who happened to be the dental assistant of Engleman. They split his insurance afterward. Around this time, Engleman must have grown more comfortable with his killings, as he struck again in 1977. This time, he killed both Vernita and Arthur Gusewelle at their farm in Illinois. Vernita was bludgeoned while Arthur was shot. This was done so Arthur's wife could collect his life insurance. Finally, in 1980, Engleman killed Sophie Barrera with a car bomb. She owned a dental laboratory and Engleman owed her money.
The 1980 murder led to Engleman's incarceration. He received a life sentence with no parole as jurors opted out of the death penalty. He died in Jefferson City of old age.
