Wynnum Central station opened in 1888 as Wynnum South when the line was opened to Manly. In 1913, the line through the station was duplicated from Murarrie to Manly. It was renamed Wynnum Central in 1931. On 15 October 1983, the line was electrified from Park Road to Thorneside.
Wynnum Central serves the homonymous suburb of Wynnum which was named after the aboriginal word describing the screw pine.
