Murarrie station opened in 1888 at the same time as the line was opened to Manly. In 1912, the line was duplicated from Park Road to the station and from the station to Manly in 1913. On 15 October 1983, the line was electrified through the station from Park Road to Thorneside.
Murarrie station was named after the homonymous suburb of Murarrie which was named after Mooraree House built in c. 1861 by Christopher Porter.
Murarrie station has two platforms consisting of an two side platforms. Platform 1 is for outbound services and platform 2 is for intbound services. To the north of the station is the Fishermans Island freight line.
Murarrie station has three station entrances. Two are from the level crossing on Queensport Road South and one from the carpark on Murarrie Road.
Murarrie station does have disability access however assistance is required due to the level crossing.
There are bus stops nearby on Queensport Road South. The routes that serve Murarrie are Great Circle Line routes 598 and 599.
