Birkdale station opened in 1889 at the same time as the line. On 1 November 1960, the station was closed due to the truncation of the line to Lota. It was rebuilt and reopened on 26 July 1986 when the line was rebuilt to Cleveland which was electrified to Wellington Point.
Birkdale serves the homonymous suburb of Birkdale which was named by local landowner William Thorne in 1880 after his birthplace.
