AVID stands for advanced via individual determination. This to us students means that your parents do not need to be riding you all the way and you should want to be better. The only way to do that is to be individually motivated.
Parents should know that AVID is a very helpful resource for incoming freshmen and anyone that is in high school. Being an incoming freshmen, AVID gives you resources on how to succeed with the transition from middle to high school.
In the parent workshops we talk about how we do our TRF’s, tutorials, focused notes and what we do in order to support our classmates. We have students that have been in AVID for a couple of years talk about how it has helped us through our high school journey. The goal of our program is to get everyone to a 4 year university.
AVID provides many different opportunities for students to meet with college reps and Alumni’s. Students have the chance to ask questions and get special insight into both out-of-state and in-state schools and decide which is a better fit for them. There are plenty of opportunities for students to connect with college reps and exchange information in case they are really interested in applying to a certain school. Students also take notes on these college speakers and can keep them for later use.
AVID gives so many new skills to students that other students would not normally get. AVID students are known for being very organized and knowing how to think outside the box. This program places special emphasis on critical thinking skills, teamwork, organization, and preparing students for college.
This program gives students the opportunities to tour their favorite schools and get a feel for what it is like to be on a college campus. This aspect is very important in the AVID program because it puts students on campus among other college students, where they can imagine what they could possibly look like in the future. Going to different school campuses is also very helpful in helping students discover new schools they had never heard of before and giving them more options and opportunities.
Office Hours is another great recourse that is open to students. They are able to get help from their teachers during specific hours in the school day. This is very important for students to get the help they need, especially under the circumstances we face. It is important to feel connected with teachers even if it is only to talk about anything on your mind, it doesn't always have to be school related.
