A: In a 2023 study, 98 percent of seniors who participated in the AVID program were able to graduate on time. 94 percent of seniors planned on attending an accredited university. 93 percent of seniors had completed the requirements for entering a four-year college.
Q: How does AVID help you in the real world?
A: AVID helps students with many real world aspects. The most major aspects include time management skills, organization, learning how to build your resume, how to complete interviews, and how to be financially smart when going off to college. As part of the final in the AVID program students will go through mock job interviews by building a resume and interviewing with retirees. This is a valuable experience because you get to learn all the do’s and don'ts of an interview and how to remain professional. Along with that during your senior year you will be applying for financial aid and scholarships and learning how to become more financially stable when going to a four year university.
Q: What does the AVID family mean?
A: Being a part of the AVID family is a very important concept within this program. The AVID family is the creation of strong connections that we make with students within this program and with your teachers. We bond with each other and truly get to know one another which allows us to become more comfortable and vulnerable together. This program isn’t just about going to college but also making true friends that we can come to when we need them or if we’re struggling in classes. Being able to have your AVID family in your other classes is very helpful during tutorial because they have more of an understanding of what you're learning and they help you get through the problem together. You get to be with these people year after year until you graduate so you create long lasting relationships within the program. Having this AVID family makes our college and knotts berry farm trips even more special and exciting. The AVID family brings you love and support while you journey through your middle school and high school experience which is not something you can get in any other program.
Although there are many misconceptions about the AVID program, the AVID program allows students to have the opportunity to attend a four-year university. Even with today’s growing competition, AVID has stood the test of time and has continued to produce college-bound students. In the AVID program, we have been taught that the end result doesn’t match who you are as a person; while we do strive for academic success, the program cares more about its students than how a letter on a piece of paper defines them. If you join the AVID program, you are expected to take rigorous classes, maintain high academic achievement, and have a strong drive for success. All of these expectations combined are what makes the AVID program meaningful and impactful to each and every student. Although there are many challenges along the way, you can always rely on the AVID program to assist you in your time need; the family aspect of AVID shines through in this regard. Having those bonds also create connections that can become meaningful and useful outside the classroom. No matter what type of student you are, this program will always support you and push you to do your best. Receiving that support can become really beneficial, knowing that there is always someone willing to listen or talk with you. If you’re considering joining AVID, it would be , even though it may be biased, this program offers more opportunities than any other programs offered at Bernardo Heights middle school and Rancho Bernardo High school.
