Senior year avid student's perspective
As we are finishing our senior year we are looking back and begin to realize all the benefits we have gained from the AVID program. When we started back in middle school or freshman year some of us could have been skeptical at first. Some of the rumors you may hear from other people about AVID can be misleading. As AVID students for 5 or more years we can definitely disagree with the rumors. But some may ask, what is AVID? AVID stands for advancement via individual determination. We are reminded that individual determination means what you put into the program will determine how much you take away from the program and its wealth of resources. Oftentimes people think of AVID as a class for students who struggle in school which is the complete opposite of the true meaning of AVID. AVID is meant for students who are motivated and determined to succeed in school and life. AVID is a resource for those who want to apply and get accepted into a four year university and half way through our senior year most of have or will have conquered this goal already. Gaining life skills such as organization, communication and leadership is a major part of AVID.

When students think about AVID without knowing what it is or what it teaches, they oftentimes believe AVID is just more work that you are adding on to your plate. What people do not realize is that the “extra” work that you are doing is actually benefiting you in some sort of way. For example, all of the note taking that is done in AVID is something that should be done anyways and is a necessary skill to help prepare for college. Notes are a great way to remember and reflect on material which is what you do to succeed on tests and quizzes. AVID has all the tools and knowledge to help you succeed. AVID is not just about giving support with your academics and to get you to college because the biggest part about AVID is family. Family, community and sense of belonging is very important to AVID because throughout high school sometimes you don't know what someone could be going through in their life and sometimes having someone that has been in your AVID family for a while is the person to communicate with. When having an AVID family you are never alone.
