What will this 1 day course cover ?
We will employ both theory and practical sessions to cover:
Selection of the correct type of map for Fellwalking.
Understanding map scales and symbols.
Taking a grid reference to confirm our location.
Orientating the map to the ground to know where we are.
Practical navigation strategies for following a route.
Using a Silva Compass.
Measuring distance and timings to know how far/how long.
Integrating navigation apps into our route finding.
Who is this course for ?
Anyone who wants to learn the basics to be able to follow a circular or linear route mostly on paths in good weather and be able to select and follow the most appropriate route back if the weather takes a turn for the worst.
What do I need to bring ?
Your usual clothing for Fellwalking (see FAQs if in doubt), an OL19 Ordnance Survey map of the Howgill Fells and Upper Eden Valley and a Silva compass if you have them. (If not, we cam provide.) Food, drink and any medication you require.
