Question 1: How long are the walks ?
Answer: Walks around Sedbergh are suitable for most people. They are generally between 3 to 5 miles long and can take between 2-3 hours at a steady pace with plenty of time to chat and admire the views. Wainwright Walks generally involve distances of between 6-10 miles and a more substantial ascent of between 3-600metres over the course of a 4-5 hour walking day. They explore the routes that Alfred Wainwright devised when visiting and writing about the area. Discover the Howgills walks also cover the highest tops but will focus on achieving multiple summits and enjoying the broad airy ridges that characterise the Howgills and surrounding Fells during a 5-6 hour day.
Question 2: What equipment do I need ?
Answer: Most importantly is a pair of walking boots or trail shoes with a good grip and which are comfortable to wear. We also advise you to wear loose comfortable clothing, including a base layer, fleece and a waterproof jacket which may be carried or worn according to the conditions. A warm hat and gloves are also useful when the weather is a little chilly or a sunhat when the sun is shining (which it does from time to time) can also be useful. Please bring your own food and drink for the day and any medications you may require.
Question 3: Where do the walks start and finish ?
Answer: Most walks start in Sedbergh, we often meet at the Black Bull Inn (LA10 5BL). If the walk starts somewhere else, we will provide a What 3 Words location for you to meet us - usually this will be a layby or carpark. The majority of walks are circular and so will finish where they started. If a walk does not finish where it started, we can organise lifts to pre position cars at the finish or bring drivers back to the start point to collect their car.
Question 4: Are any of the walks accessible for people with mobility challenges?
Answer: Some of the Walks around Sedbergh can be adapted to cater for visitors with mobility challenges. If you would like to discuss this, please get in touch and we will work with you to plan a suitable walk that meets your needs.
Question 5: Is public parking and Public Toilets available in Sedbergh during the day ?
Answer: Yes there are two reasonably priced public pay and display car parks in Sedbergh at Joss Lane and Loftus Hill. They are open 7 days per week 9am - 6pm. There is a public toilet available on Main Street adjacent to Joss Lane.
Question 6: What happens if the weather takes a turn for the worst?
Answer: We will always try to get out and about even if it is raining or the wind is blowing - such days can be equally invigorating; but we will look for options to adapt the walk route and discuss these with you to take advantage of more sheltered areas and try to keep things comfortable. If we think bad weather is likely to threaten your safety, then that comes first and if an alternative cannot be found, we will cancel the walk and issue a full refund.
Question 7: Do I need to bring my lunch ?
Answer: That is upto you, most walks will take place over lunchtime and it is likely we will stop to have a break and hopefully admire the views. We always recommend bringing some food and drink with you to keep your energy levels up. Sedbergh have several outlets on Main Street where you can purchase sandwhiches, snacks, bottled water and fruit beforehand.
Question 8: What if I have a question not covered here ?
Answer: By all means get in touch by email, phone or text and we will try to answer any other queries as promptly as we can?
