Discovering the Howgills will open up a whole new area of Fellwalking. Whilst there are some similarities to e the Lakeland Fells, Yorkshire Dales and Pennines, the Howgills are unique for the wild ruggedness of their long undulating ridges, steep sided valleys and long reaches unhindered by walls, stiles or indeed many other people. From their summits it seems as if the whole of Northern England from Morcambe bay to the Pennines can be seen extensively on a clear day. One can bag six or seven summits in a day and still have time to enjoysome refreshments in one of the locally hostelries that surround these magnificent Fells.
The walks here place an emphasis on reaching the highest summits, enjoying the ridges and peering down or passing through quiet and often isolated valleys. All of them are ideal as challenge or team building events and can be supported by road transport and refreshments at either end. Whatever you decide to do, you are sure to have an exhilarating day.
A Traverse of the Howgills. 12 miles / 6 hours. We start at the Black Bull Inn in Sedbergh and ascend making our way along a broad ridge taking in six summits before continuing north to finishing at The Kings Head in Ravonstonedal. The walk can also be done in reverse order or as two teams with a swop of car keys as you meet.
Howgill's Skyline Walk. 9 miles / 5 hours. We walk 'the sleepy elephants' those Howgill summits that appeared to Alfred Wainwright and many traveller on the M6 motorway since, like a herd of sleepy elephants snoozing with their backs to you. This walk can be done as an outward journey, finishing at Carlin Gill or we can return to Sedbergh by a lower route.
The Westmorland & Furness Way Circuit. 25 miles / 10 hours. The Westmorland & Furness way has both a high level and low level route between Ravonstonedale and Sedbergh. This walk covers them both, providing the best of both worlds with a high level traverse followed by a lower return across Ravonstonedale Common and alongside the River Rawthey.
