Impressions

From the moment I arrived in Ilocos Norte, everything felt different yet incredibly welcoming. The people at Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), the faculty, students, and even the local community treated me not as a stranger, but as a true friend, always with warm smiles, genuine interest, and open hearts. That kindness made adjusting to a new country so much easier and turned every day into a joyful learning opportunity.

Through the Halina Umaykan program, weekend trips to Vigan and Pagudpud, and daily interactions, I discovered so much about Filipino culture, language, history, and natural beauty. I learned everyday phrases in Filipino and Ilokano, explored colonial heritage sites, relaxed on stunning beaches, and hiked to beautiful waterfalls, experiences that broadened my worldview far beyond what I imagined.

The teaching practicum was the heart of it all. Teaching Grade 9 students in a Philippine public school gave me fresh perspectives on classroom dynamics. I learned how to build real connections with students through care and humor, observed how respect flows naturally in their interactions with teachers, and saw how active and quick-to-learn they are. These differences from my teaching context in Indonesia challenged me to adapt, innovate, and grow as an educator.

Overall, SEA-Teacher taught me far more than teaching techniques or English fluency. It taught me resilience, cultural empathy, the power of stepping out in faith, and the beauty of human connection across borders. Despite my initial doubts about cost and uncertainty, this program proved that great opportunities are worth the leap—and that God truly opens doors when we trust.

This journey has strengthened my passion for teaching English, expanded my confidence, and reminded me why I chose this path. I will forever be grateful to UMP for nominating me, SEAMEO for creating this program, MMSU and its wonderful people for hosting me, and every friend I made along the way.

Thank you for an unforgettable, life-changing adventure.
