Kyle Fletcher 7-12 Music

Meet the Maker: Kyle Fletcher

My name is Kyle Fletcher and I am a 7-12th grade Band teacher at New Berlin West. Maker culture is important because it allows students to experience and learn about the world in a real and authentic way.

Provocation: People on this planet have very different cultures and customs. Many times these cultures exist in harmony but sometimes they do not. How might we connect cultures to bring people together to show the commonalities between cultures and provoke empathy amongst people?

Maker Plan: Music Composition

MAKER PLAN Students will create a composition of music to help connect people to each other. Skill builders will be taught on various digital programs to help the students get an idea of what options are available to them other than simple musical notation.

What we are making, Why we are Making, Who we are Making for:

We are making a music composition with intent to bring people together over the love of music. We are making this composition to help connect ourselves and our experiences to those of others through the music that both parties listen to and engage in. This will build empathy for others' experiences and identities.

Must know tips for Teachers:

Making does not have to be simply physical in nature. You can use digital tools to facilitate a maker experience.

Make sure that your students are proficient in the programs that you are making available for use.

Allow students to challenge the guidelines...within reason
