In loving memory of Rick Norris—an interpreter, mentor, and community advocate who left a lasting mark on the South Dakota interpreting and Deaf communities—we announce the creation of the Rick Norris Legacy Community Fund through the South Dakota Interpreter Association (SDIA). This fund will carry forward Rick’s legacy of generosity, mentorship, and advocacy by providing ongoing, meaningful support to Deaf, Hard of Hearing, DeafBlind individuals, and interpreters across South Dakota.
Rick’s influence extended far beyond his interpreting work. He was known for lifting up others, offering encouragement and practical help in times of need, and creating opportunities for both interpreters and Deaf community members to thrive. This fund is designed to embody those same values—serving as a lasting resource that responds to real needs while promoting growth, equity, and care.
The Rick Norris Legacy Community Fund will operate as an annual, needs-based assistance fund dedicated to strengthening the interpreting and Deaf communities in South Dakota. The fund’s vision is threefold: to uplift in crisis, empower through growth, and unite in community. Funding will be provided in three categories listed by priority level.
Emergency Relief and Compassion Assistance
The fund will provide support during unexpected, life-altering events that might otherwise isolate or destabilize individuals.
The death of a loved one (e.g., funeral travel expenses, burial costs).
Personal or family medical crises (medical bills, access to treatment, or related needs).
Acts of God, including natural disasters, severe weather events, or unforeseen accidents.
Sudden financial hardship that prevents an interpreter from maintaining certification or stops a Deaf community member from participating in vital community connections.
Professional Advancement
Rick believed strongly in the importance of professional growth and access to opportunity.
Assisting with leadership training, travel for presenting at conferences, or coordination of community-based events.
Encouraging the next generation of interpreters by supporting high school or college students pursuing interpreter training programs.
Community Engagement
The fund will also encourage deeper community connections and accessibility.
Providing assistance to Deaf community members or interpreters who need financial support to attend or organize cultural, educational, or social events.
Supporting accessibility initiatives that foster inclusivity across the state.
Promoting intergenerational mentorship and spaces where Deaf and interpreter communities can build trust and collaboration.
By blending relief, growth, and engagement, the fund reflects Rick’s holistic vision of service and community care.
We are honored to announce the establishment of the Rick Norris Legacy Community Fund, unveiled at the 2025 Interpreter Appreciation Gala.
