Are you new to South Dakota or recently graduated? Are you looking to work in South Dakota as a Sign Language Interpreter? If so, we have some important information you should know! There is a law in South Dakota that you must hold national certification or have an EIPA score of 3.5 or higher in order to be financially compensated for your interpreting work. It is a class II misdemeanor if you work with out this certification. This certification must be registered with the state annually. If you don't hold national certification or have an EIPA score of at least 3.5, you will have to register for a Provisional Certification (PC). You can work under a PC for up to 5 years while you work towards national certification or achieve a 'passing' EIPA score. During this time you are required to meet with a state-approved mentor for 8 hours a month. You can find the details and registration forms on the South Dakota Department of Human Service's website: CLICK HERE
