1. i) Have brief information of the origin of Scouting along with the definition, purpose, principles, and method of the Bharat Scouts and Guides.
LORD BADEN POWELL
BP IN ARMY ATTIRE
LADY BADEN POWELL
A. Origin of Scouting:
Scouting starts with Founder, Lord Baden Powell of Gilwell.
He is the Chief Scout of the World affectionately known as BP.
Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden Powell was born in London, England on Feb 22, 1857
His father was the Rev. HG Baden Powell, professor at Oxford. His mother was Lady Henrietta Grace Smyth Baden Powell, who was the daughter of British Admiral W.T.Smyth,
His father died when BP was about three years old, leaving his mother with 7 children. BP lived a glorious outdoor life with his four brothers, hiking & camping with them in many parts of England.
In 1870, BP entered Charterhouse school in London, He was the goalkeeper of that football team.
At the age of 19, he graduated from Charter House & join Army as a "sub-lieutenant" & came to India, to join the regiment which had formed the right of cavalry line in the famous "charge of the light brigade" in the Crimean war.
In 1897, BP was in Africa, taking part in the campaign against the Zulus & later against the fierce tribes of Ashanti & the savage metabele warriors. The natives feared him so much that they give him the name "Impessa", the "wolf-that-never-sleep", because of his courage, his scouting skills & his amazing tracking abilities.
In 1899 he raised to Colonel.
In 1899, there was a 217 days seige held at Mafeking, a town in the North-West part of South Africa, where rebels held Britishers until the relief force finally fought their way to help on 18th May 1900. BP was in that town fighting against all the odds & created a local group containing local people "Mafeking Cadet Corps", who helps the township all the way. After the win, BP raised to the rank of "Major Colonel" & the idea of Scouting in his mind flourishing day by day.
As a result, he wrote "Aids to Scouting" & immediately it becomes popular in Britain. It becomes a textbook in Schools.
BP set to work adapting his experience in India & Africa among the Zulus & other Savage Tribes. He gathered a special library of books & read all the training of boys through ages- from Spartan boys, the Red Indians, etc.
Scouting sees the daylight in the summer of 1907 when BP along with 20 makes First Scout Camp, at Brownsea Island in the English Channel with great success.
Then, in the early months of 1908, he published by part, his handbook for training, one of the bestsellers till date, the "Scouting for Boys".
Boys and girls spontaneously formed Scout troops and the Scouting Movement started spontaneously, first as a national, and soon an international phenomenon. A rally of Scouts was held at Crystal Palace in London in 1909, at which Baden-Powell met some of the first Girl Scouts. The Girl Guides were subsequently formed in 1910 under the auspices of Baden-Powell's sister, Agnes Baden-Powell.
Scouting was founded in India in 1909 as an overseas branch of the Scout Association and became a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1938. Guiding in India started in 1911 and was amongst the founder members of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 1928, also covering present-day Bangladesh and Pakistan at that time.
In 1910, the movement grows unexpectedly that BP realized that Scouting was to be a life's job. He resigned from Army & embarked upon his "Second Life" as he called it - his life of service to the world through Scouting.
In January 1912, Baden-Powell was en route to New York on a Scouting World Tour, on the ocean liner SS Arcadian, when he met Olave St Clair Soames. She was 23, while he was 55; they shared the same birthday, 22 February. They became engaged in September of the same year, causing a media sensation due to Baden-Powell's fame. To avoid press intrusion, they married in private on 30 October 1912, at St Peter's Church in Parkstone. 100,000 Scouts had each donated a penny (1d) to buy Baden-Powell a wedding gift, a 20 h.p. Standard motor-car. There is a display about their marriage inside St Peter's Church, Parkstone.
BP starts a trip around the world to meet Scouts in many countries, after WWI ends in 1920, Scouts from all over the world met in London for First International Scout Gathering- the 1st World Jamboree. BP proclaimed as Chief Scout of the World on the 6th Aug 1920, the last day of Jamboree.
At the age of 21 of scouting, it has more than 2 million members practically all over the world. On, that occasion BP was honored by King George V, being made a baron under the name of Lord Baden Powell of Gilwell.
Finally, when BP reached the age of 80, he returned to his beloved Africa, with his wife, Lady Baden Powel, Olave St. Clair Somes, who had been his enthusiastic helper in all effects & who herself was the Chief Guide of the World Girl Guides.
They settled in Kenya.
BP has gone home on Jan 8th, 2941. with the message to World Scouting "Try to leave this world a little better than you found it & when your turn comes to die, you can die happy in feelings that at any rate you have not wasted your time but have done your best".

SCOUT SIGN
SCOUT SALUTE
LEFT HAND SHAKE
SIGN:
The Scout sign is given by raising the right hand in level with the shoulder, palm to the front with three fingers stretched together and the thumb closing on the little finger.
SALUTE:
The Scout Salute is given by raising the right arm smartly to the level of the shoulder, palm to the front with three fingers stretched together, the first touching the forehead above the center of the right eyebrow and thumb closing on the little finger. After the salute, the arm is smartly brought down. If a stick or thumb-stick is carried, it must be passed to the left hand or kept under the left armpit. When a staff is carried the salute is given with the left forearm bent at a right angle at the elbow with three fingers open, thumb closing on the little finger palm downwards, the first finger touching the staff. When hands are occupied, the salute is given by eyes left or right as the case may be.
LEFT-HAND SHAKE:
The Scout Handshake is done by the left hand only. If a stranger makes the Scout sign to a Scout, then he should acknowledge it at once by making the sign back to him, & then shakes hand with the Left hand. This handshake comes to Scouting from African Tribes, they usually shake hands with the left hand because they carry weapons on their right hand.
