Notes For Scoutmasters
It is not necessary to incorporate all 15 bugle calls into your program immediately. Begin with a few such as Assembly, Reveille and Taps. To The Color is the next appropriate call to add.
Bullying is not acceptable in any Scout unit or program. This also applies to potential stage fright of a new Troop Bugler which could result in snide comments and snickering from others. As always, promoting a positive culture of respect for all will deliver a desired outcome for these youth.
Troop Bugler may use a bugle, trumpet or cornet. Other instruments are not appropriate since it is impractical for the Troop Bugler to take these on the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, Continental Divide Trail or any other trail.
Most high school trumpet players have the skill to play the 15 bugle calls. Other high school brass players should be able to develop the skill to play the bugle.
If needed to evaluate the quality of a Troop's bugle, seek assistance from a band director or music instrument technician.
