Scotland has a legacy of producing chippy, good-time pop rock bands: think The Fratellis, The View, and, more recently, The Snuts. To that list we can now add Perth five-piece Parliamo, a tight-knit group barely out of their teens who’ve already supported both the latter and The View’s Kyle Falconer.
Powered by the arch, bold vocals of frontman Jack Dailly and the twin guitar assault of Calum Simpson and Finn Freeburn Morrison, their barrelling stomps and cheeky choruses have already made quite an impression, both in their homeland and beyond. With radio support from the likes of Vic Galloway, Huw Stephens, and KEXP Seattle in addition to those prestigious support slots, they’ve also wowed crowds at Wide Days, Off The Record, and Belladrum.
Indeed, such is their live prowess and reputation that as well as selling out Dundee’s Church (400 capacity) in the blink of an eye, they’ve already lined up a solo headline UK tour before heading to Austin, Texas for SXSW in March. That will be followed by appearances at Stag And Dagger and Liverpool Sound City, shows the band hope will whet appetites even further for the new material the band is currently working on.
Following on from their singles and ‘Thrill of the Chase’ EP, new Single ‘Six Ways From Sunday’ – out on 21 February via Alt. Waves Records – gives a taste of what fans can expect. Record at Leith’s Post Electric studios with Idlewild’s Rod Jones, it’s a rollicking track concerning young love, the trauma of abortion, and growing up. Says Dailly of his protagonists: “They struggle with the trauma of the ordeal, they avoid crying by laughing and jesting at what their religious grandparents’ reaction would resemble, and they ponder on what could have been different had they been older and readier.”
“I know you love me” Dailly sings in the soaring chorus, a refrain that’s sure to be bellowed back at him by audiences across the land in the months and years to come. It’s a bright start for sure, but Parliamo are just getting started; that legacy looks in very safe hands.
