This virtual field trip features a combination of the fantastic resource, Research Quest, from the Natural History Museum of Utah, and a virtual field trip from the Cleveland-Lloyd Quarry. The Research Quest is hosted by Carrie the archeologist and students will be able to see district science specialists on site at Cleveland-Lloyd!
UTAH SEEd STANDARD
Standard 4.1.3 - Analyze and interpret data from fossils to provide evidence of the stability and change in organisms and environments from long ago. Emphasize using the structures of fossils to make inferences about ancient organisms. Examples of fossils and environments could include comparing a trilobite with a horseshoe crab in an ocean environment or using a fossil footprint to determine the size of a dinosaur. (LS4.A)
Standard 4.1.4 - Engage in argument from evidence based on patterns in rock layers and fossils found in those layers to support an explanation that environments have changed over time. Emphasize the relationship between fossils and past environments. Examples could include tropical plant fossils found in Arctic areas and rock layers with marine shell fossils found above rock layers with land plant fossils. (ESS1.C)
Students will begin this virtual experience by beginning with the Research Quest - What Happened at the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry?
Teachers should setup an account following the directions by clicking the image on the right. The video will show teachers how to access the access code for students.
Print the Research Assistant Notebook for the second investigation, What Happened at the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry? One per student.
Read the Instruction Guide to familiarize yourself with the investigation directions.
Begin the online investigation, What Happened at the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry? with your students. Complete Steps 1-4.
Have each class come up with 2 questions they would investigate/or things they would like to see if they went on a field trip to the Cleveland Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry. (remember these need to be scientific testable questions that THEY could find out… so their questions can’t be “What would I find if I dug 100 feet down?"
Connect with Your Virtual Experience
Insure that your webcam is working, your computer microphone is on, you have speakers/sound working, and you can project from your computer to the screen.
Be sure your students have access to their Research Assistant Notebook to write down any information they learn from the science specialists and the museum docent.
Be sure you have the Zoom link you received from the District Science Specialists.
Open this image in another tab to use as part of the virtual investigation.
