Professor at the Department of Physical Chemistry, University of Debrecen, Hungary
István Bányai was born in Debrecen (Hungary) in 1953. He studied chemistry at the Lajos Kossuth University (at present University of Debrecen) where he received his tripos master degree in 1977. Then he worked for the Department of Physical Chemistry in the group of Prof. Mihály Beck studying redox reactions of nitrosyl complexes. He received his PhD in this subject in 1986. Between 1986 and 1998 he spent 5 years in Stockholm (Sweden) at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) where he was one of the founders of dynamic NMR school led by Julius Glaser. Between 1998 and 2005 he worked on the structure and dynamics of rare earth metal chelate complexes. From 2005 to 2016 he was the head of the Department of Colloid and Environmental Chemistry of the University of Debrecen. At present he is full professor of physical chemistry. His research focuses on the study of dynamic aspects of NMR spectroscopy, NMR of colloids, nanoparticles and porous materials.
