Rhodes Digital Commons

Researchers are encouraged to publish research articles with preferred publishers. In addition to publishing their research articles, they are encouraged to also upload a second copy of the published article into the institutions’ institutional repository (IR). The IR is also referred to as the Green Route of Open Access publishing practices.

The purpose of an IR is to centrally archive all research output by an institution, and at the same time, to increase the visibility of the institution and the impact it has in addressing research challenges.

Rhodes University has invested in various platforms to archive institutionally generated research in a central Rhodes Digital Commons:

Please speak with the Librarians for more information and assistance

Rhodes Digital Commons (Repository) for research articles, conference papers/posters, reports and audio/visual material

The institutional archive for research articles, books & book chapters, conference papers & proceedings, reports, and audio-visual media

Rhodes Digital Commons (Research Data) for research data in all formats

The institutional archive for research data in all formats.

Rhodes University subscribes to Figshare for archiving research data

The value of storing and preserving research data:

Rhodes Digital Commons (Journals) for Rhodes hosted journals

In 2016 Rhodes University Library implemented the Rhodes Hosted Journals service. The Rhodes Hosted Journals service complements the Seals Digital Commons in that together these systems provide an established platform for scholarly communication.

The Rhodes Hosted Journals service runs on the Open Journal System System (OJS), a journal management system developed by PKP (Public Knowledge Project).  The service is intended to improve and expand access to research and to support scholarly journal publication processes by optimising article level discovery (linked data environment, including link resolvers, indices and harvesters).

Crossref

Crossref makes research objects easy to find, cite, link, assess, and reuse. We’re a not-for-profit membership organization that exists to make scholarly communications better.

Rhodes University subscribed to Crossref in 2016. We use Crossref to assign Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to articles/objects when required.
