Building a Community Where Everyone Belongs

What does it mean to belong to a group or a school? Belonging is that deep sense of being accepted, valued, and connected to others in a community. It's about feeling safe enough to be your authentic self while still being part of something larger.

In this lesson, students will explore the concept of belonging through video storytelling. They will discuss the concept in class and create a compelling video narrative that captures what makes our school community unique. Students will develop technical skills in video production while reflecting on the importance of creating inclusive environments where everyone feels they belong.

By the end of this project, students will not only have created meaningful content about our school community but will also have developed empathy and understanding about how each person contributes to our shared sense of belonging.

A Question To Ask Yourself: (20 Points)

If you were creating a school of your own, what would you do to make sure that all students feel like they belong? - Why?

  • Please respond to this question thoughtfully in paragraph format (3-5 sentences). Your response should be professional, respectful, and well-reasoned.
  • Consider the discussions we've had about belonging and how school environments impact student experiences.
  • Support your main point with at least one specific example or detail. This reflection helps inform our project planning and demonstrates your understanding of the importance of creating an inclusive school environment.

Step 1: Plan Your Video

Our School … Our Story - Video Planning Template

Planning a Video is Like Planning an Essay

Follow these simple steps to transform your ideas about belonging into a structured video outline:

  • Introduction (Hook): Write an attention-grabbing opening statement that introduces your topic of belonging at our school.

  • Three Main Points: Develop three distinct sections that highlight different aspects of belonging (like community activities, support systems, or inclusive spaces).

  • Conclusion: Create a powerful closing statement that reinforces your message and leaves viewers with something to remember.

Remember that each section of your outline will guide what visuals, audio, and text you'll need for your video. Think about how you can show each point visually, not just tell it.
