Photo of Trading Post, Carl Faust Collection.
This painting was done for the Washington High School Class of 1931. It likely hung in the library next to the painting of Zebulon Pike. The painting is featured in the 1931 Brainonian Yearbook.
The painting depicts an early trading post that stood in Brainerd near the Mississippi. The location was picked so that people could visit the Trading post by boat, by horse or eventually, by train. This particular trading post was in use from around 1880 to 1920. Although Heald did not paint the scene from life, we can assume that she saw photos of the post and based this painting on them.
