This portrait of Chief Hole-in-the-Day was completed by Sarah Thorp Heald only a few days before she died. The painting was for Tom O'Brien, who commissioned a few paintings after his house burned down. Heald was fascinated with Ojibwe's history in Crow Wing County, and she was especially interested in Hole-in-the-Day. In these last paintings by Heald, her brush strokes are visible and her colors are light and airy.
