Medical Research Hub: Margdarshi Fellowship

Scope of the Margdarshi Fellowship

Prof. Visweswariah is a Margdarshi Fellow supported by the DBT Wellcome Trust India Alliance. Under this fellowship, she has initiated interactions with Clinicians in CMC Vellore in order to build strong research ties between scientists and engineers in IISc and Clinicians in CMC Vellore. This initiative is largely being assisted by faculty of the Centre for Biosystems Science and Engineering in IISc.

Projects undertaken in this initiative involve Clinicians and Engineers across Campus where the focus rests on Clinician Inspired Projects. Problems faced by Clinicians are addressed by researchers in IISc with constant interactions, joint symposia, student training and MD/PhD students being recruited to IISc to pursue their research.

Prof. Visweswariah is specifically involved with Clinicians in the Department of Endocrinology where based on their need, she has started investigations into chronic, early onset pancreatitis. Studies include a molecular understanding of the role of GC-C in this debilitating disease, and also identification of mutations associated with this disease in populations in the India Sub Continent.

Her collaborators in CMC Vellore are Drs. Sudipto Dhar Chowdhary and Dr. Reuben Thomas (Dept of Gastroenterology); Dr. Sathya Subramani (Dept of Physiology); Dr. Anna Pulimood and Dr. Alex Thomas (Dept of Pathology).

In IISc she collaborates with Dr. Siddharth Jhunjhunwala and Dr. Mohit Jolly in the Centre for Biosystems Science and Engineering, and Prof. Kaushik Chatterji in the Department of Materials Engineering.
