Shipping container conversion: Mottainai House 2019

The concept came about whilst working in commercial construction and witnessing the sheer amount of useable materials that are discarded.

After 5 weeks spent in Japan on various homestays, the experience of compact minimalistic living that was entrenched in their culture stuck with me; and learning from less fortunate communities in Central America and noting the resourcefulness and the adaptability, I had decided to design a small sustainable off-the-grid dwelling for myself. The build was designed within the parameters of the gathered materials over a two month span, changing as new materials were sourced.

The brief i worked toward: a fully self-sustainable, transportable retreat built from over 80% discarded materials aiming to allow occupants time to recharge their batteries whilst living a minimalist lifestyle. Focusing on the simple joys in life, the space is designed to enjoy music, cooking, while being immersed in nature.

After my parents buying a shell of a house with only the framing and roof completed, I was tasked with designing several changes to add a 'wow' factor to the living area.

I convinced my mother to remove the enclosing staircase wall and engineered a floating staircase, along with opening up to the second storey with a void connecting a rhombus room to the living area. I also added

As money was running out and a need to add some flair to the large wall seen from without the whole living area, I built a timber frame out of scrap on site, gyprocked, and had 4 step cornice set around it to produce a 'frame' for the tv.

While working as a bar manager, I was also tasked in multiple maintenance and facelift work, including this beer garden timber feature wall.

Previously clad with lattice, i first had to concrete behind the wall to deal with stormwater issues from an adjoining shed. Followed by framing, sarking, green-tongue, and finally secret-nailed tongue & groove boards. Which I later sanded and oiled, and 5 years on it has aged beautifully.
