THE ISLAND OF GOATS AND HONEY
There are two types of goat on the island - a more ancient breed, Capra Aegagrus Pictus with curved ibex type horns, and a more modern goat with curly horns.
This ancient deer-like goat, Capra Aegagrus Pictus is extinct in its pure form. Its genes still exist in the local goat population. Elsewhere in the Aegean this species is on the ICUN Red List as vulnerable.
A CAPTIVE BREEDING PROGRAMME TO RESURRECT THE SPECIES?
A couple of decades ago there was an attempt to set up a genetic programme to breed a pure form of the ancient Capra Aegagrus Pictus of Samothrace both for touristic and environmental reasons. This foundered. It would be wonderful for the ecology of the island to start up this programme again!
If successful, the resurrected 'Goat of Samothrace' could be valuable as a hunting trophy, and to help bring tourists to the island.
Alas, the captive breeding programme faltered; hopefully someone on the island will make an attempt to re-start it.

Extinct on Samothraki?
Interbred animals with the ancient phenotype still exist on the island. This deceased specimen was seen on the island in 2016. There is still a chance to resurrect this species.

HONEY
The island is almost completely organic, with natural self-sown flower fields. The island has long been famed for its special honey, and all travelers to the island from the 1600s to nowadays made special mention of the island's honey.
Honey and bees formed part of the ritual of the mystery of the Great Gods.
The honey of Samothrace is exceptionally pure, and rich in antioxidants and other healthful plant chemicals.
There are around 10,000 bee-hives on the island. You are encouraged to visit the apiaries on the island, and buy honey directly from the producers.

The honey of the island has been famous since ancient times.
There are no pesticide residues in Samothrakian honey, which is a pure, natural product with a delightful peppery flavour.

Mizithra Cheese and Kaskavali Cheese are two local Samothrakian cheeses.

Local cheeses and dairy products are made by Dairyman, Panagiotis Papanikolaou , at the island's only dairy in the village of Makrylies.
FRUIT PRESERVES
A local variety of plum tree, that is endemic to the island,is harvested for the Samothrakian 'Prausti' conserve - a type of preserved fruit that is served 'wet' as a dessert with coffee.
BAKED GOODS
A local specialty - available from the artisanal bakery in Chora, is Eptazima - a type of rusk that is unique to the island.

ASTRAEA OLIVE OIL OF CHORA
Astraea is a family run business based on the island of Samothrace. With a tradition that dates back to, at least, the 7th century BC, and ideal climatic conditions, Samothrace provides an ideal location for the cultivation of olive trees. The family olive estate is located in the southern part of Samothrace, in the ancient olive growing region of the island.
Kostantinos Stavrianakis, an Environmental scientist with a Postgraduate degree in Ecology and George Stavrianakis, a biologist, run the Astraea family business and are both dedicated olive oil producers and traders.
ALCOHOL
There is a long local tradition of wine and spirit making.
Tsipouro is a local pomace brandy, around 40% alcohol.

The Women's Agricultural Association of Samothraki specialises in traditional food products of the island. It is based in Palaeopolis, and supplies shops across the island.
