On a small island such as Samothraki, where tourist numbers are very low, and the peak tourist season is rather short, the commission fees charged by these websites take large bite out of any small income a landlord or hostel owner might make.
On Samothraki the period of the year landlords and hoteliers can earn a living is very short. The locals need to eke out the rest of the year on their peak season earnings. Every euro adds up.
The percentage taken by Booking.com and Airbnb etc. is bad for the island's fragile economy - money that could (and should!) stay on the island is moved away from it.
You may get a discounted rate if you call your accommodation directly, and tell them you looked at Booking.com or Airbnb etc, and decided to call and book directly.
If you offer to pay cash in hand you might also get a small discount.
To be on the safe side, you should book in July and August. However, even then you will probably find somewhere to stay, even if you have not booked, as on an average peak season day (2015 numbers) there are some 2500 visitors on the island, and over 4000 beds available (although this number includes camp site places).
In winter, spring and autumn there is no reason to book at all - just turn up and choose the village you want to stay in and ask around.
Unlike other islands, you will not find touts for accommodation greeting you as you get off the ferry. Tourist numbers to Samothraki are too low for that to be economically justifiable.
There are currently (January 2018) 128 accommodation providers on the island, with around 4,100 beds during peak season (July-August). In winter around 600 beds are available, and in the spring and autumn, around 1,400.
The island’s two camping grounds are located in Therma and are under the administration of the municipality. Both camping grounds offer showers, toilets and electricity. One camping ground is equipped with asphalted areas for caravans and camper vans, bamboo roofs for shade, hot water and a mini-market. A small playground makes it the preferred option for visitors with children. The other camping ground (free-camping) was established in an incentive to limit the activities of wild camping, and therefore left in a more unadulterated state with dense tree growth and no hot water.
A social cooperative runs the cafeteria and mini-market located at the bigger camping ground.
