Garchomp is one of my favorite pseudo-legendary Pokémon, so this project gave me the opportunity to take a character I already loved and reinterpret it through my own 3D work.
Created as both a personal and school 3D fan art project, my goal was to imagine Garchomp with a more monstrous and realistic aesthetic while still preserving the iconic silhouette and recognizable design of the original character.
I began the character in ZBrush, focusing heavily on the creature's anatomy and overall form. Rather than simply recreating the proportions from the game and artwork, I wanted the body to feel like it could function as a real creature. I developed the musculature, refined the larger anatomical forms, and pushed the sculpt toward a more powerful and physically grounded appearance.
From there, I moved into Substance Painter to develop the surface materials and texturing. A major focus was adding scale detail and variation to the skin while maintaining the rough, rugged appearance that I envisioned for the creature. I also spent time developing individual materials, particularly the rough skin and harder surfaces such as the horns.
The final character was posed dynamically and rendered in Blender's Cycles engine, allowing me to create an action-oriented presentation that emphasized the creature's size, strength, and movement.
Reimagine a familiar character through realistic creature design
Push creature anatomy and musculature
Develop detailed scales and surface textures
Explore realistic material definition
Create a dynamic, action-focused pose
Practice the full workflow from sculpting through texturing and final rendering
This project was a great exercise in taking an existing design and asking how I could make it feel more like a living creature, rather than simply recreating it as a 3D model.
Garchomp gave me the chance to combine several parts of my workflow — ZBrush sculpting, creature anatomy, Substance Painter texturing, material development, posing, and Blender rendering — into one finished piece while still leaving room for my own artistic interpretation.
