I was tasked almost right away on the city. Which I quickly learned was completely up in the air. With three different ideas of eras, and that was about it. I have sense gone much further in the city, asking the group questions of era, culture, technology, etc. As we pin down the city, and what it will look like more. We came to the idea of an older wooden styled London similar to the height of it before it burned down.
I started on modeling as I am more comfortable working with 3D over 2D. I made a simple water wheel and house for the team, as I was told we wanted to start ideas for texturing and filters for the models. In turn I created some older styled wooden models with displacement maps for them all.
Once I showed the group the models I was further tasked to import them into unreal engine, as well as to help out with texturing them, as well as changing them from displacement maps to normal maps for UE.
I have sense put the models through substance painter to get the normal maps for low to high poly work flow, as well as gave them textures.
When I put them all together inside of UE, it seemed to go well. The next morning I was informed that migrating from a different project changes the source files of the project, which makes the github invalid. A simple fix it to just undo my changes, and re import them back into UE.
I feel this is where we could improve. We all have many ideas to add and share and tend to stumble over each other. As well as some conflicting ideas between our higher up unreal engine guys at times. However I am happy we are doing so much testing and use of the engine right away, so that hopefully nothing surprises us down the line!
I see this with character art and designs where something will be considered done for a week, only to be revisited by someone new the next week. While I do not have an issue with changes, I do have one with inefficiency. So far we have changed every single thing in the story except the cupcake. We are redoing the main characters designs and I have to ask why? That was the only part that had solid concept art and ideas.
When I asked if we could story board some of the in-between shots of the main events. Such as how does Rooster get from here to there? I get told oh yea I can work on that, then starts working on a different story. Trying to add a civil war, police brutality, etc while forgetting the main characters goals, wants, and intentions. With the north star being about finding comfort in a world that hates you.
I feel that we need to able to stick in our own lanes a little more. Where we have many people that are jacks of all, we also end up stuttering on each other. For instance I was specifically put in charge of the city, and I have given many chances for peoples ideas and for anyone to chime in. But it is after I am done asking, and moving to the next steps is when I get given changes.
Overall I think we are working well together so far, and I think once we are able to start assigning people more concrete tasks, it will solve many of these issues with people being busy. I think we are just struggling to get a shared mental image of what the story will be looking like!
Further more we always have people chiming in at the last second. Where I have seen this with my own work as well as with my other teammates. For me the best example of this was when I created a rough blocking in 3D and arial map of it. 12 days later I get sent a whole bunch of messages about changing the map, and get sent a map from a triple A game, with a city that has over 200 buildings. Like yes this look way better, but do you want to spend the next year creating buildings?
