Over the weekend I spent some time thinking about the city and modeling it, and what this should look like. Not only for the fantasy feelings we want, but the disparity of wealth between the two peoples. With this I thought of pushing steampunk with some of our team suggesting desiel punk instead. We decided on a more mixed style as well Eli and I went in depth for a few hours in hour the city should be modeled out, while he took notes down on what we should be doing. With my suggestions being things like making the pipes try to be contained to the roofs and not in eye level on the street. Descending materials on the buildings, with the roofs and top floors being wooden and the bottom floors being stone, steel, rock, etc. The levels and materials for the scaffolding, how many floors, lights being near street level.
In an attempt to keep my sanity with steam punking the city, I have been making modular assets that I can use on different buildings and have them not look the exact same! It has been a lot of work this week creating the different assets for it all and coming up with ideas for it all. The most important thing for me is that is does not look the same from building to building! So in this I have been creating a lot of different assets to use accross the different buildings. So it will have cohesion while also not looking the same from building to building.
A major issue I am having with this is this group. They are questioning and not wanting anything that isn't steam or pipe work now. "IS THAT A LIGHTNING ROD?", Those are too similar to AC units, Solar Panel? Yet we want fancy steel work, street lamps, and phones. Yet not a soul has any other ideas for what should replace any of it.
Eli is always saying he wants a sky bridge, as well was saying my first attempt on steam punking the house wasn't enough! With this I went back to Maya and made a bridge between the two houses! In this the silhouette is massively changed, feels more fantasy, and looks even more distinctive. My next set of structural scaffolds was also turned down for being too industrial. So I reworked a lot of the ideas! One of those was adding the crane in the middle of the house! It gave it a much more interesting look!
With this being more technological, even if it is mostly pipes going around the buildings. It does lead to a fun time doing that detail work of connecting things together. In this it makes the tops of the strictures much more interesting and chaotic looking. Thinking of where the boiler and water tanks should be stored. How and where they should get cooling and heating from! Then sending that stuff around it fun, but also very time consuming! The better I want it to look the more time I have to think of it as a real structure. To even the roof tiles and taking the time to make each and every one of them unique in shape and placement!
I have spent at least 30 hours this week working on these houses. My main issue is that I am basically drafting what this should look like in 3D. Which is super time consuming! I am now getting used to working in ways where I can change almost anything at any given time now due to this.
Meanwhile my team might be scared of working in 3D. I haven't seen a 3D model from Kiki, Ambrose, Rob, or Asha. Elijah created the water tower, but didn't make the interior viable. Eli created one model so far, granted it was the main character and was changed while he was creating it multiple times.
We are not going to be animating next semester right now. I have done all of the rigging, almost all of the modeling, half the textures, and built the map of the entire city. While no one on the team wants to animated. I am left to creating this entire project on the 3D portion so far and this semester is almost over.
