Silent Churchyard is a personal environment study created to push my hard-surface sculpting skills in ZBrush, with a particular focus on stylized stone, architecture, and environmental storytelling.
I wanted to challenge myself by building an entire cemetery scene from the ground up. Rather than creating a single structure, I worked across the full environment — sculpting the chapel, stone walls, fences, roofing, headstones, and surrounding terrain while maintaining a consistent visual language throughout the scene.
One of the biggest goals of the project was learning how to translate traditionally hard-surface architectural forms into a more organic, stylized sculpting workflow. I experimented with breaking up perfectly clean surfaces, introducing subtle imperfections, and giving the stonework a sense of age and weight.
This project became a valuable bridge between organic and hard-surface modeling for me. Working on the architecture alongside the terrain and environmental details helped me understand how different forms can be simplified and exaggerated while still feeling believable as part of the same world.
But beyond the technical study, I wanted the environment to tell a story.
This chapel is all that remains of a long-forgotten village, buried beneath snow and silence.
Once surrounded by a thriving settlement, the cemetery now stands alone — the last sentinel of a place that disappeared from history. The names carved into the headstones have slowly faded, worn smooth by countless winters and relentless winds.
No maps mark its location. No roads lead to it. No paths remain.
Only the chapel, the graves, and the silence remain.
The environment was designed to communicate that sense of abandonment through form, scale, and atmosphere. The weathered architecture, uneven stonework, buried terrain, and snow-covered graves all work together to make the scene feel like something that has been forgotten rather than simply left behind.
Stylized hard-surface sculpting in ZBrush
Architectural and environmental modeling
Stylized stone and surface breakup
Roofing, walls, fences, and cemetery structures
Blending organic and hard-surface forms
Environmental storytelling through shape and silhouette
Creating mood through environmental design
Silent Churchyard became a playground for exploring how much story can be communicated through an environment without relying on characters or dialogue. Every structure, damaged surface, and buried detail helps suggest what once existed here — and what has been lost.
