The Abyssal Whale began as a personal creature sculpt I created simply because I wanted to experiment with designing a massive deep-sea leviathan. What started as a fun ZBrush project has continued to evolve over time, eventually becoming a creature I am now bringing into my own game, Deadweight.
Sculpted in ZBrush, the creature was designed around the idea of a mysterious abyssal whale — something enormous, unfamiliar, and capable of existing within the darkest depths of the ocean.
One of the things I particularly enjoyed about this project was designing the creature so that its forms could work at multiple scales. While the original concept is intended to feel like a massive leviathan, the underlying design can also be adapted into a smaller, more alien fish-like creature depending on how it is used.
That flexibility makes the model useful beyond a single presentation. It can function as a game creature, cinematic asset, creature design study, or large-scale environmental threat.
As the project continued to develop, I decided to take it further and bring the creature into Deadweight as an enemy. This required moving beyond the sculpt itself and into the technical side of creature development.
I created a rig for the whale and developed procedural swimming systems to give the creature natural movement through the water. Instead of relying entirely on manually animated motion, the procedural setup allows the body and fins to react as part of a larger swimming system, helping the creature feel more alive within the game world.
High-detail organic sculpting in ZBrush
Large-scale creature and leviathan design
Flexible creature design for multiple scales and uses
Creature rigging for real-time applications
Procedural swimming and movement systems
Game-ready creature development
Integrating original sculpting work into an active game project
What began as a personal experiment has become one of my longer-running creature projects. I love the idea that a model can continue to evolve long after the original sculpt is finished — gaining new functionality, new purposes, and eventually becoming part of a larger world.
The Abyssal Whale is now not only a creature I designed, but a working part of Deadweight, combining my interests in creature sculpting, animation, rigging, procedural systems, and game development into one project.
