Year-End Reflection
05.09.2024
What are the three most important lessons you learned in HTMP? Please address these areas and comment:
Perform basic skills in hotel operations.
Describe the importance of the hospitality and tourism industry to the economy.
Demonstrate professionalism and career planning skills.
The three most important lessons I learned in HTMP is the ability to read guests' needs, professionalism, and public speaking. With this knowledge, I can apply these when working in the service industry to provide the best customer service. The importance of the hospitality and tourism industry is high to Guam's economy as that is our major source of revenue. It also provides many employment opportunities. As a result, it is best to provide the best service to our tourists. From what I learned in HTMP, I learned the importance of dressing professionally as it is what leaves positive first impressions. As for career planning, I learned the importance of setting clear, set goals and understanding strengths and goals.
2. Describe the most memorable experiences in HTMP.
My most memorable experiences in HTMP include serving at the Japan Autumn festivals for the past two years and the times the class took breaks outside the classroom at our old campus. Through the Japan Autumn festivals, I got to experience what is was like working in the service industry, and I also got to meet and bond with new people. When our class took breaks outside at our old campus's field, I had the most fun with my friends.
3.What were your happiest or proudest moments of high school?
My proudest moments of high school include when I got inducted into NHS and when I presented my year-long thesis paper for AP Literature. Joining NHS has been a goal of mine throughout my academic career, and so being able to achieve that in my Junior year made me very proud of myself. As for presenting my thesis paper, I am very proud I even got to complete my research because this assignment is basically equivalent to the ones in college. Surprisingly, I got a very high grade on my paper and presentation overall, and so that made me proud as well. It was thanks to my public speaking opportunities I had in HTMP which led me to become a great presenter.
4.What were the challenges you had to overcome in high school (do include your reflections on COVID pandemic and double session at JFK campus)?
Majority of the challenges I had to overcome in high school deals with procrastination. However, I have yet to find out if it is because I work better under pressure, or if I am just lazy. In terms of challenges regarding the COVID pandemic, I would say communication with teachers was quite difficult as communication was through text. If I were to have them in person, I feel that everything would have been much smoother. For our transition to the JFK campus, I genuinely hate it. Leaving school at 5:00 PM just leaves me drained and tired at the end of the day, and it limited the hours in which I could work at my job.
5.What were your regrets in high school?
My regrets in high school include my decisions to sign up for AP/Honor courses as well as sign up for executive positions in clubs. Because I was in multiple AP/Honor courses and in extracurricular activities throughout the year, I would say I missed out a lot on spending my youth as a carefree sudent. All I did was stack responsibilities on top of responsibilities for myself, which was very stressful.
6.How has high school prepared you for life (including college and career) or how has HTMP taught you life lessons?
In terms of career, high school has prepared me for life in terms of being independent and public speaking skills. As for college, my english classes throughout high school has taught me how to properly write emails conduct research. HTMP has taught me how to apply for jobs and reading the needs of people.
7.If you had to redo high school, how would you do it differently?
If I had to redo high school, I would decide not to sign up for AP/ Honor courses nor sign up for any extracurricular activities. I would have preferred to spend my youth on fun instead of stress.
8.Who was the best guest speaker in HTMP during all three years? Why?
The best guest speaker in HTMP during all three years has to be Mr. Hank Rice. I enjoyed listening to his stories of working in the hospitality industry, and most especially, his magic tricks.
9.What was your favorite ice breaker question? Explain.
My favorite ice breaker question has got to be the question, "If you were to commit any crime, which would you choose, murder or stealing?" I found that to be a fun question, and me being the only one who chose murder made it funny.
10.Rate your effort in HTMP3 (1 being the lowest, and 5 being the highest). Explain your rating (ex. work, family, senoritis)
My effort in HTMP is probably a 3, and this is due to having senioritis. I believe my senioritis would not have been so bad if it were not for these factors: work, Video class, and club duties.
11.What advice do you have for incoming Hospitality students?
Advice I would have for incoming Hospitality students would be to participate in as many outside-classroom opportunities/activities as possible.
Paper Airplane Activity
05.07.2024
My classmates and I participated in an activity where we had to make paper airplanes. The objective was to hit the board, or "North Korea," in order to pay off our debt. Our debt depended on how many papers we purchased.
My group members chose me to lead our group. My group won at the end, with a debt of only $100. Although we won, there are areas in which we could improve. There was not really that much effective communication, and so it was kind of awkward working together. We did not really work well as a team a result of this. If I were to redo this activity, I would communicate more with my group members and encourage participation.
"Be a Tourist" Field Trip
4.19.2024
From a tourist's perspective, what do you consider are Guam's strengths and weaknesses in our tourism product? Explain, in relations to what you saw at the various scenic and historic sites, how Guam rate as a tourist destination and what areas of improvements does Guam need?
From a tourist's perpective, I would say Guam's strength is its natural beauty and history. A weakness would be the way we take care and preserve these sites. As a tourist destination, I'd say it would be a great place for a change of weather and learning history.
What was your favorite site? Why? Were there any surprises?
My favorite site is the Emerald Valley. There were no surprises.
Which were the sites you visited for the first time?
There were no sites I visited for the first time.
Where did you present? How did you do?
My group and I presented at Adelup. I did okay. I made sure to present quick since I knew we were running short on time.
What did you enjoy most about this field trip?
I enjoyed looking at sites that involved looking at the water. I enjoye Two Lover's Point the most because of the view.
What changes would you make if you were to do this again?
I would begin the trip at an earlier time, so that it is not too hot we would have more time to eat at the food court.
Annual Classroom Environment Reflection
4.17.2024
My level of senioritis is a 5 out of 5.
Although I would say because it is my third year of this course, I grew to be very comfortable with my peers. I do not feel pressured when I do presentations in front of them. In terms of the class itself, I must admit that I am homesick and that I miss our classroom back at Sanchez. The JFK classroom feels like a hotel, but not one that I enjoy. It is always hot when I enter the classroom. Overall, it is clean and colorful, but too bright and hot.
I feel that my motivation for this classroom really declined throughout the years. As I witnessed my classmates leaving in the beginning of each year and we began doing mostly book work, I really began to lose interest in the class, and so my senioritis worsened as a result. I feel that if we had our normal schedule and environment at Simon Sanchez and we had more hands-on opportunities, my senioritis would be lower.
Ted Talk
02.29.2024
What
On February 29, my classmates and I presented for our Ted Talk. The topic was "Overcoming Adversity," and my topic was about accepting my racial identity.
So What
This was a new experiece for me, as I am the type of person who does not really enjoy disclosing sensitive topics (to me) strangers. I was first in my class to present, and so it was kind of difficult because I was not sure how the whole thing would flow. Although I practiced, I did end up blanking out during my presentation. I had to look at my notes a few times which was not good.
Now What
Because of this experience, I was able to really find what I need to improve in terms of my public speaking skills. It also really prepared me to deliver my presidential address at the NTHS induction, which was like 2 days after. I am really proud of myself, and I was glad to receive constructive criticism from the panelists.
Freshmen Recruitment
02.07.2024
What
On February 7 2024, my classmates, Ashley, Clarise, Rispa, Riah, and Justine and I promoted our GCC Hospitality program to this year's freshmen, the class of 2027. We showcased a bunch of aspects of the program, such as the benefits, fun activities, and opportunities offered throughout the year. My group and I did an amazing job presenting, thanks to our great teamwork and practice to prepare for this presentation.
So What
I believe we did a perfect job presenting to our freshmen audience. Our presentation went without a hitch, and we were able to capture their attention. A lot of the students provided positive feedback, which really encouraged me to keep doing my best. After both presentations, I have been hearing positive word-of-mouth feedback, and so I believe we were able to convince a lot of students to join the program.
Now What
Furthermore, I believe my classmates and I did an amazing job presenting, which I am very proud of. I look forward to seeing the outcome of our presentation, as well as next year's presentation. Something I would do differently to showcase our program is to include a video in our slide presenation. I feel that it would better captivate the audience.
