The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
This first artifact, the assessment for American Born Chinese, addresses the Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 7E, "understands how to select, construct, and use assessment strategies and instruments for diagnosis and evaluation of learning and instruction; " I have been actively working to create assessments that evaluate the learning that is taking place in the classroom and striving to ensure that the assessments are not just memorization based, but diving into the concepts that will continue to build throughout their time in the classroom. This assessment was designed to serve freshmen classes, as we had been covering topics of characterization, stereotypes, and Singl Story circumstances.
This next artifact is a presentation slide from when I had introduced what the sophomore unit capstone project would be, following their learning of how to form an argument. The assessment addresses claims, research and evidence, as well as public speaking, which the class of students had been working towards in the unit. Per the Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 7K, "appropriately uses a variety of formal and informal assessments to evaluate the understanding, progress, and performance of an individual student and the class as a whole; ". While this artifact was the capstone project, there were several other assessments to track where their skills were as we moved along. For example, we have practiced impromptu speeches to form confidence with public speaking, identifying and writing claims, and practicing how to find evidence and incorporate the research done to bring strength to their arguments. This final assessment will address all of the newly learned and practiced skills.
