The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
This first artifact is a character map used to track the various characters int eh play, The Crucible. Students had been having a difficult time with tracking and remembering who the various characters were, who were being accused of witchcraft, and who was doing the accusing, which I discovered through collecting data and assessing their understanding of what was happening in the play. When I reviewed the data, I implemented a lesson of going creating a character map that would be able to be used throughout the rest of the play, following Act 1. This artifact reflects Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 5H, "understands when and how to adapt or modify instruction based on outcome data, as well as student needs, goals, and responses".
This second artifact is a slide from a freshmen lesson that was about literature as windows and doors, which are perspectives that we can view literature. I ensured that my lessons demonstrated Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 5C, "knows how to implement effective differentiated instruction through the use of a wide variety of materials, technologies, and resources;". I ensured this because while I used slides to convey messages or for notetaking purposes, it was another way to be multimodal with the lessons. Projecting the day's agenda, materials, and pointing out important details with slides was an additional resource that went along with activities, giving directions that can always be accessed, as well as many other uses.
