The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
This first artifact is an essay written about why literature is good for in my senior seminar class. This paper addresses Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 6B, "understands that the reading process involves the construction of meaning through the interactions of the reader's background knowledge and experiences, the information in the text, and the purpose of the reading situation;". This is standard is addressed because by addressing what literature is good for, it gives a better scope of what opportunities can be through reading at any age and finding books that can be loved and enjoyed.
This second artifact is a speech that I wrote for commissioning in December 2023. This speech was for the purpose of a student teacher being selected for demonstrating their content knowledge throughout their placements. Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 5H, "understands when and how to adapt or modify instruction based on outcome data, as well as student needs, goals, and responses." was met throughout my time as a student teacher. In my speech, I refer to an anecdote that discusses a student who had an unsent IEP to our school and the work of advocating for that student and their needs, after assessing their written and verbal data.
