Prior to Friday 6 January, 2012, Nicholas Emmerson was like any other ordinary 16-year-old teenager. He had many friends, loved getting down to the beach and enjoyed all sorts of water activities. Nic went to school and had a part time job as a sales assistant at the Melville Bunnings Warehouse. He played footy for the East Fremantle and Melville football clubs and even played indoor soccer in Bali with a local Indonesian team.
Unfortunately, while riding his motor scooter Nic was involved in a major accident with a school bus, and that was the last trip that Nic and his motor scooter would ever make. His life changed dramatically on that day, and he ended up in hospital for the next 12 months on a long journey of intensive care and rehabilitation therapy.
Despite all of this, Nic decided to make the most out of his life and has since made many significant achievements.
In October 2013 he spoke on the radio using his iPad on behalf of National Disability Services (NDS) regarding the implementation of ‘No fault insurance’.
He has completed a Certificate in Business Administration at Central TAFE and selfpublished his own book. Nic has also produced a 45-minute documentary entitled ‘No Limits’, a remarkable story outlining his journey of recovery and rehabilitation since his motor vehicle accident.
Nic has completed an online course in ‘Writing books for children and young adults’ and taught himself how to ride a purpose-built trike with one hand. He participated in the Santos Great Bike Ride for Homeless Youth and did a tandem sky dive for his 21st birthday.
In 2016 Nic was asked to be a joint keynote speaker at The Occupational Therapy Australia conference. Since that time he has been invited to tell his story at further public and corporate events and seminars. Nic recently just passed his driving test and is now employed on a part-time basis with a company called Access Group Australia. Nic was also a runner up in the 2019 Seven News Young Achievers Awards.
