At the youth level, athletes are split up into five categories. Youth D, C, B, A, and Junior. Males and Females compete in separate categories. What category your climber(s) is placed into is determined by this chart. Every other year, your child will move up in age category.
With the increase in indoor climbing facilities and accessibility, competition climbing is becoming one of the fastest growing youth sports around the world. According to Climbing Business Journal, there are currently over 414 commercial climbing gyms operating solely in the United States. Competition climbing has become so popular that it will even be featured as an exhibition sport in the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
Climbing provides a unique, new, and exciting experience for every young athlete. The sport provides a total body experience that challenges athletes physically and mentally, which allows your child to develop functional skills and build confidence on and off the wall. Although climbing is an individual sport, being part of a team provides a supportive environment where your child has the opportunity to compete, train, travel, learn, and build friendships with other climbers around the world. Climbing is a universal language.
The skills your child will acquire through climbing will facilitate their physical and mental development as a young athlete as well. Through climbing, your child will learn and develop a greater sense of body awareness and strength, problem solving skills, good sportsmanship, the importance of teamwork, goal setting, how to overcome fear and setbacks, discipline, hard work, and so much more. The possibilities for your young athlete are endless and being part of a climbing team allows your child to showcase their developing talents through a sport they love and can continue for the rest of their lives.
