Standard 8 - Collaborative Relationships – The competent teacher builds and maintains collaborative relationships to foster cognitive, linguistic, physical, and social and emotional development. This teacher works as a team member with professional colleagues, students, parents or guardians, and community members.
Technology Tool
Description: This was a tech tool presentation I gave to my peers to promote another form of technology use in the classroom. I chose Pear Deck as it is hands on, visual, and also a creative tool. It also allowed me to create a sense of knowledge to promote to my colleagues.
Connection to Illinois Learning Standard: For this learning standard it is easily connected to the idea of teachers collaborating. This was an assignment that allowed me to learn from peers but also to teach my peers something new for their teacher tool box. It connects to performance indicator 8J, "works with all school personnel (e.g., support staff, teachers, paraprofessionals) to develop learning climates for the school that encourage unity, support a sense of shared purpose, show trust in one another, and value individuals." This tool will help teachers reach a variety of students.
Self-evaluation: I really enjoyed this assignment as it really introduced me to positive collaboration. I understood the idea and need of collaboration but this is such a positive idea to share tools with one another. I would like to continue to suggest trying this in schools I may work in. This does not only benefit us as teachers, but greatly benefits our students too.
Institute Day
Description: This is an agenda from an institute day I had during my student teaching experience. The choice sessions were ran "conference" style, you had your pick of breakout sessions. This was a great way for me to meet other teachers and learn something new on a topic I am interested in.
Connection to Illinois Learning Standard: This particular schedule may have seemed unusual but it was a prime example of collaborative relationships. Each session was not ran by the same teachers. Some ran 1 session and some ran 2, but everyone was able to attend at least 1 session. This related to performance indicator 8B, "understands the collaborative process and the skills necessary to initiate and carry out that process." These teachers showed me the importance of continuously learning from one another even through the uncomfortable conversations.
Self-evaluation: This day of my student teaching was truthfully one of the most educational. The break out sessions I went to were all informative and student focused. They weren't focused on improving test scores or grading policies but instead topics like college for immigrants. One of my favorite pieces was attending a student panel of seniors and getting to hear their insights on what makes an effective teacher.
