Standard 5 - Instructional Delivery – The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
Integrated Instructional Unit
Description: This particular assignment allowed me to further explore a strategy that may be helpful to more hands on learners. In turn this lead me to do a significantly larger amount of research into other strategies to reach students of all learning practices. After research I had a better understanding of the importance of differentiation in delivery.
Connection to Illinois Learning Standard: When thinking of standard 5 it was important to make sure I was looking at a strategy I hadn't used before and was continuously learning ways to reach more learners. This assignment allowed that and allowed a further comprehension of why certain methods reach a certain learner. To do this effectively teachers need to "understand the cognitive processes associated with various kinds of learning" as stated in knowledge indicator 5A. In order to be a successful teacher we must be life-long learners and apply what we can where we can to reach the maximum amount of students.
Self-evaluation: This assignment was one of my biggest learning curves. I think trying to really discover how this method is best practiced was important. Frequently we think because we have successfully used a teaching strategy, that is the only way to implement it. This was not the case and I learned from that greatly.
Professional E-Mail Assignment
Rationale: I picked this assignment because it was one that taught me and my students a lot but also made differentiation more simplistic. Due to the fact that the assignment was so specific and detailed it allowed me to easily tailor it for my students.
Connection to Illinois Learning Standard: I thought of this assignment with this standard because in addition to differentiating the summative itself, I had to differentiate the delivery of content leading up to. Making sure I tried a "I do, we do, you do", showing right and wrong examples, and even trying a resume on their own. This gave my students the opportunity to learn from the other side being the hiring manager instead of the applicant. This helped me demonstrate that I "know techniques for modifying instructional methods, materials, and the environment to facilitate learning for students with diverse learning characteristics" as stated in 5E knowledge indicator.
Self-evaluation: I really enjoyed teaching this unit and ending with this project. Though it took quite a few days it was effective. I know this after both looking at submissions but also after receiving multiple emails more appropriately formatted than I had previously.
