Standard 4 - Learning Environment – The competent teacher structures a safe and healthy learning environment that facilitates cultural and linguistic responsiveness, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, positive social interaction, mutual respect, active engagement, academic risk-taking, self-motivation, and personal goal-setting.
Class Website
Description: This artifact is my business classroom website. This will be duplicated and edited depending on which business course it is for and depending on the page's stipulations. This will help students have one medium for where to find information regarding me, our classroom, and our course. I have produced this prior to becoming a teacher and through my journey to getting to my first classroom, I am sure there will be many edits or changed ideas. As I grow as a professional I expect that this site will grow as well. Whether that means editing pages, changing pages, or adding other pages I see fit.
Connection to Illinois Learning Standard: Creating our website is relevant and a huge part of the Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 4-Learning Environment because it gives the student and parents an inside look at what our course will be. The rules, expectations, procedures, etc. will be pertinent to the experience our class has with one another. I have taken an approach that empowers the students to work beside the teacher as opposed to for the teacher which is explained further in my Instructional Style & Strategies page. This proves that I "know how to assess the instructional environment to determine how best to meet a student’s individual needs" which is necessary per knowledge indictor 4E. This page will help the student to know what the tone of the classroom is going to be for the duration of the course.
Self-evaluation: Creating a classroom website was extremely important to my growth as a student moving into a career in education because there are things that I was aware of but didn’t know could be specified or customized to my liking. But, I realized how necessary it is to create specificity for those who need it. The idea of creating my own classroom environment and setting the tone for my class is exciting. I remember as a student I was a huge rule follower, I loved that rules gave me structure and a plan. I think in the same way this also would stress me out unnecessarily. I, as a teacher, don’t want students to feel like they are obeying me, but instead having a hand in making their education enjoyable and successful.
Daily Check-in
Description: This artifact is a daily check-in that I used almost every day during student teaching. This can be tailored to any and every class and can be used as a tool to measure my students social-emotional state daily. In addition, it can be used to measure their pace for day to day work.
Connection to Illinois Learning Standard: This standard directly relates to this artifact because it ensures my students are in a healthy mindset. If my students aren't in a good state I am then able to adjust accordingly to be the most positive support I can be which supports my mastery of knowledge indicator 4G, "knows strategies to implement behavior management and behavior intervention planning to ensure a safe and productive learning environment." Lastly this is a great opener and allows me to also check my students progress within a particular section.
Self-evaluation: This was one of my favorite tools I put into play this semester student teaching as it was so simple yet easily diversified. The students could really make this what they wanted and I could adjust it depending on the course. It was an effective way for me to check their understanding and SEL state.
