Europe Mini Literacy Lesson
Description: This assignment was one of five within a theme based unit. It promoted diversity through exploring different popular pieces of literature but doing so through engaging learning strategies and methods. This gave me a clear view of what it meant to incorporate literacy regardless of the "theme" or course.
Connection to Illinois Learning Standard: I chose this lesson because it displays a clear ability to portray concepts from a piece of literature. To take a piece of a story and deliver it to students who may need something a little more stimulating to their senses. As indicated in knowledge indicator 6A I showed my "understanding for appropriate and varied instructional approaches used before, during, and after reading, including those that develop word knowledge, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and strategy use in the content areas."This allowed my visual learners to grasp concepts more clearly.
Self-evaluation: I really enjoyed this assignment, the opportunity to teach a more advanced piece of literature to a younger group was new. Through mainly working with high school students this allowed me to get creative and think for how to reach minds of younger students. With that being said, I was still able to keep the main concepts the central focus of the lesson.
Thanksgiving ELA Lesson
Description: I chose this because it took a writing concept and reached a variety of learners. The videos reached my visual learners, my group examples reached my hands on learners, and the practice problems reached my trial by error learners. This was fun to focus on a particular holiday and move it from something they related to into a written topic.
Connection to Illinois Learning Standard: Standard 6 suggests the proficiency and use of reading and writing in all content areas. This particular lesson does that. We all love movies and the idea of feeling like a kid, this lesson connected to my students by doing just that. They then read a story and analyzed for key components of writing. By using characters were familiar with this enhances my performance indicator 6L, "facilitates the use of appropriate word identification and vocabulary strategies to develop each student’s understanding of content."
Self-evaluation: I really enjoyed this assignment because it utilized videos to help my students. I being a former student who used to struggle with reading comprehension, I was constantly looking for ways to help me make connections more quickly with literacy concepts. These videos helped really bring clarity to those who may not have understood by just reading.
