Standard 7 - Assessment – The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
Assessment
Description: In this assignment, we used Google Forms to assess a "classroom" of students. In doing this we accomplish performance indicator 7O which proves teachers "effectively uses appropriate technologies to conduct assessments, monitor performance, and assess student progress." Once students took the test we created charts of data which as indicated by performance indicator 7M "maintains useful and accurate records of student work and performance." This helps educators to see a clear picture of their students' performance.
Connection to Illinois Learning Standard: This assignment connected to the standard because through the analysis, we were able to prove our abilities of performance indicator 7J and it "uses assessment results to determine student performance levels, identify learning targets, select appropriate research-based instructional strategies, and implement instruction to enhance learning outcomes." Throughout the analysis, we can gather if our curriculum is being understood thoroughly by our students and help us plan better for future reteaching.
Self-evaluation: Now having student taught, this assessment method could effectively help me in gathering data to best help my students. The data given to us is a key component to being able to positively supporting our students. Overall, this would be
Assessment Analysis
Description: This assignment went hand in hand with our assessment we created. This allowed us to take data and analyze. From there we had the opportunity to realize what to do with our data. In whole, this was the first time I truly had to analyze data and it was a learning experience for me.
Connection to Illinois Learning Standard: This standard was easily connected to this assignment due to the fact that without assessment data, how are we going to know if we are being effective? This look at data was a little more in depth than I was previously aware of but helped me understand new ways of looking. Between percentages, t-scores, and z-scores knowledge indicator 7D displayed that I "understand current terminology and procedures necessary for the appropriate analysis and interpretation of assessment data."
Self-evaluation: During this assignment I was confused as to the purpose of needing a variety of ways to analyze the data. However, after using it I realized that some of these numbers show a better representation of an overall class understanding. Seeing a large gap indicated to me some of my methods didn't work for all students.
