Ohio State's LiFEsports is a program that uses sports to teach socially vulnerable youth life and leadership skills, focusing on social responsibility, self-control, effort, and teamwork.
Since the Fall of 2024, I have been actively involved in bringing the LiFEsports research program that Dr. Obi introduced to SUNY Cortland. Through this program, I travel to Whitney Point Elementary School to support an after-school sports program where we use sports as a tool to teach students important life and leadership skills. This experience has been an incredible opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the community while also strengthening my teaching abilities and building positive relationships with students.
I have had three semesters being a research facilitator and the Fall of 2025, I became a research assistant. I had to do a CITI program Human Research Social Behavior course to get a certification for this.
In the beginning of our sessions with the Whitney Point students, we administered a survey to those who consented to our research to establish a baseline of their knowledge.
During each visit, I observed the college students working with Whitney Point students while walking around with a Sport Instruction Fidelity Checklist.
In addition to my role as a research assistant, I will be presenting the research I’ve been a part of for the past three semesters at this year’s NYS AHPERD Annual Conference at Turning Stone Resort and Casino. I am the first author of the research poster and will be answering questions while sharing more about the incredible program I’ve been involved in.
