This map is looking at national parks and preserves located within the continental United States. I utilized Thiessen polygons to symbolize where the closest national park or preserve is given any location in the lower 48. The use of Thiessen polygons shows that the western portion of the U.S. has a much higher number of national parks and preserves and therefore it is often much easier for people that live in the west to experience national parks.
There were many cartographic decisions that needed to be made while creating this map. One was deciding which polygon labels needed to be in a lookup key. I made this decision by moving any label that made it hard to interpret what the map was showing. This allowed for a much cleaner and easier to read map.
