What are the course goals? What do I expect of you and what can you expect of me?

What's a Student Learning Outcome?

Student Learning Outcomes are statements that specify what you will know, be able to do or be able to demonstrate when you have completed a course. Our course has five Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs).

Upon completion the student will be able to:

Read and think critically about works of literature
Recognize and analyze the major genres of imaginative literature: poetry, drama, and prose fiction
Identify and discuss both themes and technical matters in literature using appropriate critical terminology
Evaluate the logical relationship between form and content
Write critical essays that demonstrate knowledge of literary works in all three major genres
Use MLA format in identification, pagination, lineation, quotation, citation, and bibliography

Student’s Contract

Our syllabus is a contract between you and me! By agreeing to stay in this class, you agree to all of the requirements and assignments included in this syllabus and all of the assignments and syllabus changes made by the professor during class. You have read and understand all class policies. You acknowledge that this syllabus may change during the semester, and that it is your responsibility--not the professor’s--to keep up with all such changes by checking the Canvas website regularly or communicating with the professor for any confusion. Finally, you agree to read the books assigned in this class or forgo the points associated with them; furthermore, you understand that your professor may present language, films, literature, television, websites, music, drama, or other media that will include adult content and/or be rated R. By accepting this contract, you agree to experiencing this content and choose this over the option of finding an alternate section of this course that covers different materials.

Professor’s Contract

By assigning this syllabus and accepting you as my student, I agree to treat you fairly and honestly and help you learn as much as you can in the next sixteen weeks. I agree to keep an open mind to all student ideas and philosophies and to not let my own personal beliefs get in the way of a fair grade or your education. I acknowledge that all the materials presented in this class are designed to teach you something about writing, research, our class topics, and critical thought on academic material and the world at large. It is my belief that all students can learn; I promise to give you ample opportunities to learn and to work on your developing skills as writers and thinkers throughout the semester. I agree to treat you all as equals, holding you and myself to the highest of academic standards established by our English Department, college, and American academics.
