After researching and analyzing three different systems that are designed to serve similar goals to our project proposal, we found a variety of useful information that would help us with our project design. OnWatchOnCampus, Rave Guardian, and LiveSave all have similarities such as an emergency call button that alerts local authorities in the case of a direct threat, and a safety timer that alerts a contact if the user does not arrive somewhere on time. These applications work because they have a simple yet clear design which is easy to learn. They also allow integration with universities and their police departments and emergency services. With some discussion we realized a few things that do not work for these applications. There are fees associated with OnWatchOnCampus that might not be affordable for some users. There is a reliance on organization to purchase services with Rave Guardian, which in turn might not be the ideal situation for the user. This design could be misleading to users and cause them to stop using the application altogether. From this research we learned a few lessons. We learned that applications that provide security and safety should be free or local officials should have some sort of safety set up for their respective counties in the form of smartphone applications. Also, 911 alone is not a sufficient access or resource. There are many elements to a crime and those resources should also be incorporated within the application. The user interface should be easy and frustration free as this will allow users to get the most use out of the application with a positive experience as well.
