The survey questions pertaining to demographics helped us understand and categorize our audience. Most of the participants were 18 years old (50%) who are freshman (50%) and live in on-campus dorms or on-campus apartments (80%). What caught our attention was the results from the questions which focused on the confidence levels of students walking around campus during different times of the day. About 60% of the students said they were comfortable/confident walking at night on-campus, but about 50% of the students felt scared/nervous walking at night off-campus. This gives us insight on how our application could help students more in off-campus areas. What alarmed us was that not a single student knew exactly what the school’s current safety procedures and services are. Most participants had a general idea of the available help, but didn’t know exactly who they should contact in the event of an emergency. This tells us that students are not aware of their options if they had a safety concern, which we can use to advance our application in order to give students the tools they need in times of duress. The overall theme is that a majority of the students, despite gender, age, or year in school, are not comfortable around campus at night, especially in off-campus areas, and need to be informed more on safety services. We will use this information from the survey questions to help our application better fit the needs of its intended audience.
