What is Academic Advising?

Academic advising is an educational process that, by intention and design, facilitates students’ understanding of the meaning and purpose of higher education and fosters their intellectual and personal development toward academic success and lifelong learning (NACADA, 2004).

Our purpose here at Rutgers University MBA Student Services Office is to provide you with information regarding the MBA curriculum, course scheduling, concentration selection, providing academic resources, and degree certification. Your advisor has a responsibility to provide you with information clearly stating and communicating degree requirements for your MBA.

MBA Orientation

The purpose of orientation is to introduce you to the MBA staff and students. This is where we provide you with the policies of the MBA program, but also where you begin to network and build academic and professional relationships. Orientation is designed to prepare you for your first day in class, but also any questions you might have. We provide you the opportunity to meet with a student panel who will give you their perspective about the program. We also assist you with course scheduling and online registration.

First Semester Advisor Meeting

New MBA students are required to make an appointment with their academic advisor during their first semester. During this time, we go over the curriculum, your upcoming semester schedule, and answer any questions you might have. This is an opportunity to get to know your advisor so that you can build a relationship that will last throughout your program.

Do I need a scheduled advising appointment, walk-in advising, or will an email meet my needs?

Scheduled Appointment

• Generally a 20-minute allotted meeting time

More involved questions and detailed discussion, such as: scheduling assistance, selection of concentration or policy exception

Walk-in Advising

• Generally a 10-minute allotted meeting time

As it is first-come, first-served, there may involve a wait. Common examples are quick policy clarification, or need a quick scheduling question

Email or Call

• Clarification if you are unsure an appointment is necessary Schedule an appointment, quick question about a policy or event, emailing an add/drop form, or asking for a number of a different department

When Contacting Your Advisor Please Include:

• Your first and last name

• Rutgers University ID Number

• Brief statement of issue/concern, reason for appointment or comments/questions

• Return phone number if you desire a call back

• Days and times you’re available

Typical Annual Advising Cycle

September: Fall semester begins, MBA Breaks take place during the first few weeks of class

November: Spring Registration

January: Spring semester begins, MBA Breaks take place during the first few weeks of class

February: Summer schedule is released. Recommended you meet with your advisor for scheduling assistance. Summer registration begins (part-time students)

March: Fall schedule is released. Recommended you meet with your advisor for scheduling assistance. Students who are graduating in May should apply before March 1

April: Fall registration beings

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! There is no such thing as a “dumb” question. Your academic advisor is here to help you figure out the intricacies of being an MBA student. Understanding your degree requirements is an integral part of your learning process and asking questions is an excellent way to learn.
